PLAYERWEB Filmkritik zur DVD BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR: In Ignoranz der Pointe am Ende des Vorgängers ist Meg wohl doch endgültig tot, aber Herbert West.

The films are their own universe but there are elements in the 6 part short stories "Herbert West, Reanimator" still not fully plumbed. The DVDs also have nice extras like director and cast commentaries and sometimes extra footage and background on effects and makeup.

Though I still wish that actor Jeffrey Combs had the blond hair and blue eyes of West. But I can imagine it, he was cast if not born for this role.

Herbert West fits him like a glove and he plays him to the hilt. Violence, nudity, mutilations and unnatural mixtures of human and animal bodies are present.

It had better have! I actually liked this version of the series better than the first due to the lack of a rape scene. It's bloody has heck, totally over the top, and very funny.

You have to let yourself be immersed in the absurdity or you might instead think of it as stupid. To me, it's brilliantly awful and some awesome classic horror.

One person found this helpful. Is it as good as the original? I don't think so but it certainly delivers the goods when it comes to dark humor.

Stuart Gordon is gone, but the direction is not bad as the film manages to look like enough like the first to keep us in the story.

There are some cheesy special effects involving bat wings and Dr. Hill's head, but overall the FX in this film hold up rather well all things considered.

As another said "a hoot" - excellent - and maybe not the end for our Dr. But where The Bride of Frankenstein actually succeeded its' predecessor in the opinion of many , The Bride of Re-Animator falls a little short.

The film tries to build on the original showing doctors West and Cain, nine months after the hospital massacre in the first movie, working in Peru on the bloody frontlines of a civil war, still experimenting with the luminous, green life-giving juice.

The notion is that in this backwater part of the world, they can work unfettered, not bothered by legal constraints.

Things get a little hairy, and the boys decide to return stateside, working at the hospital with the first unpleasantness took place I guess the hospital administrators have short memories.

Taking up residence in a house that was once a mortuary, located next to a cemetery, the doctors continue their work with creating life, using various body parts from the hospital morgue.

Dan is reluctant, but Herbert proposes they create a woman, using various body parts, centered around the heart of Dan's deceased girlfriend, Meg, who bit the big one in the first movie.

Weird experiments and bloody body parts fill the screen, as a police lieutenant with a personal stake continues the investigation of what originally happened even though the case has been officially closed.

Even the head of Dr. Hill makes a kept alive with the living giving juice. Do Herbert and Dan succeed in bring Meg back to life from spare parts?

From the title of the movie, you'd think so, but their creation is less than perfect Seeing that scene alone was worth watching this movie.

I did like this film, but felt little of what made the first so enjoyable. If they were going to make a sequel, it was only natural to take the course that the filmmakers did, but I wish they would have infused more of a story into the film, and not gone whole hearted campy on us.

The first movie did have its' humor, but it was well balanced with the rest of the story. I know sequels are rarely as good as the movie that spawned them, but I did have high hopes here.

There's plenty of gore and blood, if you enjoy that kind of thing, but the movie is light on story. I felt much of it was patched together, tying elements together with the weakest of threads.

The story may not hold up well, but it was fun to watch, especially the effects of Screaming Mad George and K. EFX Group. My real disappointment is with Artisan, the company that released this disc.

There are absolutely no special features, and all we are provided with is a full screen format. This movie was released on DVD before by Pioneer Video, loaded with special features, including two separate versions one being a minute longer than the other , deleted scenes, bloopers, photo galleries, production information, commentary, and more.

Also, the original release had both full screen and wide screen letterbox format, while we only get full screen here. You may be able to find that release, but you will most likely have to pay a premium, at least for a nice copy.

This film was followed by a third movie, Beyond Re-Animator Go for the new Arrow Video blu-ray special collector's edition.

I'll leave the reviews of the movies to everyone else here but one thing about the product is worth mentioning. Description says this 2 blu ray set is All Region but the back of the case only says Region B.

No better deal out there for these 2 movies. Ended sadly imo, for a reason I won't spoil. Good gore, good experimental progress.

Glad to see the 2 main scient I mean doctors again. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

Any follow up to the awesomely gonzo breakout hit 'Re-Animator' was always going to be an uphill struggle, but director Brian Yuzna fresh from his then debut genre blender 'Society' gamely plys his trademark motifs of black humor with bizarre horror imagery into a diverting sequel that deepens the myth but unfortunately loses the ingenuity of its predecessor Following a bout of rough and tumble in a Peruvian civil war, madcap medico students Dan Cain a solid Bruce Abbott and Herbert West an amazing Jeffrey Combs lickety split their way back to the safety of Arkham where they resume their jobs at the infamous Miskatonic University Hospital sorta forgetting about what previously happened!

Only this time, West is obsessed with creating new life from inanimate body parts and intent on piecing together his greatest masterpiece - a fully walkin', talkin' lady friend!

Luckily for him, cancer patient Gloria a great Kathleen Kinmont has sadly passed away and this gives Herbert good enough reason to forge his bride.

Throw in a returning Dr Hill again, an excellent David Gale intent on revenge and a snooping cop hoping to pin the original massacre on the duo and you have a gore filled, laugh-a-thon that doesn't take itself all that seriously.

Arrow's UK Blu-Ray release is a very solid affair indeed. An amazing 2k transfer of both R and Unrated cuts of the film even though the unrated version does seem to splice in lower resolution edits with vibrant audio for each.

Rounding out the package are a plethora of audio commentaries, a new featurette with Yuzna looking back at the film, a short doc on the many make-up effects houses that were involved with the production and a 'prequel' comic book that's added into the package.

The discs themselves are slotted into a digipak inside an outer card black slipcase although not glow in the dark as first rumored which are both clean and reflects the movie quite well.

I'm also glad to see the deleted scene 'Meg is Re-Animated' has also been ported over from the original US Pioneer version which even though isn't as good as it sounds, is still a welcome addition to the release.

All in all, the movie is a step back for the franchise which in all honesty has never full recovered, but Arrow have more than outdone themselves with a solid release which ensures the movie is treated with more respect than Dr West usually gives his patients.

Being a sequel to a masterpiece can't be easy, but this movie manages those odds quite well. Often more gruesome than its predecessor, the comedy of it is more visible and there is no shortage in the gore department.

Report abuse. Arrow Video has done it again! It's a neat little package and includes a comic book! Great item and great service. A fantastic release for a fantastic film the extras are plentiful and the inclusion for the six issue comic book Dawn of Re-Animator in a small paperback book is just wonderful!

Cain rejects the Bride's love and sides with Francesca. Heart-broken, the Bride rips Megan's heart out of her own chest and then literally falls to pieces.

West diagnoses this as tissue rejection. Hill and his zombies force West, Cain and Francesca to retreat through the wall of the lab and into a crypt in the neighboring cemetery.

Inside, all of West's prior test subjects arise and make their way towards him, stopping only when Herbert commands them to.

The unstable crypt begins to collapse, trapping Hill, West and the zombies. Cain and Francesca manage to escape the debris and claw their way to the surface of the cemetery together.

Hill, stuck in the debris, laughs manically, while Megan's heart, still in the hand of the Bride, stops beating. One idea for a sequel involved Dan Cain taking the job of a building superintendent to surreptitiously continue working on Meg Halsey's body at night.

Pre-production on Bride of Re-Animator began in early Director Yuzna considered Patricia Tallman for the role of the Bride, but on May 28, , he selected Kinmont to play the part.

A issue of Fangoria reported that Crampton declined to reprise her role due to soap opera obligations.

Principal photography began in June and wrapped the following month, on July Hill's head is found on exhibit at a carnival was shot in mid-June, [11] but this sequence was not included in the finished film.

Lovecraft stories. Patrick Legare of AllMovie gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, writing that " Re-Animator was a tough act to follow, but Brian Yuzna does an admirable job of keeping with the splattery spirit of the original".

Unlike the original Re-Animator , Bride ' s script really suffers from a lack of cohesiveness and undeterminable character motivation.

Hill to seek revenge against the crazy scientists. I did not start watching this with the highest of expectations. There were two main reasons for me: 1.

Its a sequel Generally, sequels are a bad re-hash of the first, or some misguided attempt to bring the story and characters to a new setting.

This movie is neither, instead we get a semi natural continuation of the first film, which attempts to slip in more of the original Lovecraft Novella, which ultimately, neither film lives up to.

Sure, characters that had little to no hope for life return with out a bat of the camera's eye, but this is a horror-comedy people, not The Godfather: Part II type of sequel, and I'm willing to ignore this to an extent.

Escapes the "horror movie sequel trap" quite well. This is really a shame, although I do admit, if you are not a fan of the first film you probably may as well skip this one.

I also strongly recommend that those of you who have not seen Re-Animator backtrack and watch it first, as it definitely would or maybe I should say "should" heighten your enjoyment level of this film.

Bride of Re-Animator is an excellent chunk of horror-comedy, which gets over looked when standing next to its beefy pappy.

The many experiments highlight the film when ever they appear, and the Bride herself is an excellent piece of gore design. As far as the atmosphere goes, it is surely darker then its predecessor in this respect.

Perhaps only the climax of the film truly shows the best aspects, as for the most part it reflects a similar attitude to Re-Animator, if slightly watered down.

However, at the end we are treated to multi-colored lighting, fantastic zombies, smoke and some well used gauze, used to invoke the dress of the Bride in Bride of Frankenstein.

Not to mention the earlier stated creature effects. At any rate, this is a very worthy follow-up to a horror classic.

Perhaps the script is not as strong, the quotable lines fewer and farer between and supporting characters more forgettable.

But admit at least, nay-sayers, that if nothing else you loved it when Dr. West yelled "My God! They're using tools! Looking for something to watch?
